Outstanding education

The University of Brighton has maintained its position as one of the leading institutions in the country for the study of education, according to results published today by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted).

The Faculty of Education and Sport was given the highest possible rating for its primary and secondary initial teacher education provision following Ofsted's recent inspection.

'Outstanding' outcomes, which matched the university's previous inspection results, were attained, and the 'inspirational' teaching, skilful mentoring, excellent resources and dynamic leadership were highlighted amongst others as areas of strength.

There were also impressive results for the university's employment-based and further education programmes, which were praised for their reflective and highly committed trainees, excellent feedback and personalised training, which prepares trainees effectively for teaching in a diverse society.

Paul Griffiths, dean of the faculty, said: "I am delighted that the high-quality of our teacher education provision has again been recognised by Ofsted. This result confirms the university's continuing excellent national reputation for the achievement of our students and the quality of their experience at Brighton.

"This success is due to the expertise, hard work and commitment of colleagues from across the faculty, and the excellent working partnership with schools and colleges throughout the region where students gain professional experience of teaching."

Professor Julian Crampton, the university's Vice-Chancellor, said: "This is indeed excellent news for the faculty and the University of Brighton as a whole. It cements the faculty’s position as a centre of excellence both in the quality of its teaching and students success. My congratulations go to all members of staff and students."

The faculty is one of the largest providers in the country of education and training for student teachers, teachers and other learning and development professionals. Teacher education courses are completed by 1,800 students each year in the university and its local partner colleges.
