Expanding adult education art courses
Published 29 June 2010
The University of Brighton will be launching an expanded adult education programme in art, design and humanities from January 2011.
As part of the university's commitment to provide specialist short courses including the Saturday Art School, the expanded provision will form part of a wider range of opportunities for students.
These will include short courses in fine arts, traditional and contemporary crafts and design, and courses where the university has distinctive facilities.
The expanded programme will provide courses in subjects including photography, printmaking, illustration, drawing, silversmithing, ceramics, woodwork, bookbinding, creative plastics, and computing for artists and designers. It aims to expand into philosophy and aesthetics, creative writing and the humanities generally.
The announcement follows the university's decision early this year to review course provision in this area to take account of the changing economic and social environment, and to ensure that the university is working as closely as possible with the city's cultural and creative industries and the wider community to deliver relevant and sustainable courses.
Professor Stuart Laing, the university's Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: "We are determined the university remains in step with the community and responds to the needs of local businesses.
"As a publicly-funded organisation, we take our responsibilities extremely seriously and it is right that we should constantly review our provision to ensure we are serving community needs and giving value for money. I am extremely grateful to university colleagues in the Faculty of Arts and in the University and Colleges Union (UCU) for their significant input in this review."
The development of the revised programme will take place over the summer and will continue during the autumn term. Recruitment will start from October 2010 for courses commencing in January 2011.
