Green light for green network

Event 15 October 2010

Britain's first Green MP, Caroline Lucas, is to officiate at the launch of the University of Brighton online 'Sustainability Network', created by the Faculty of Arts.

The MP for Brighton Pavilion will be at the university's Sallis Benney Theatre for presentations and demonstrations from Network members.

The Sustainability Network brings together disciplines, research clusters, action groups and projects across the Faculty of Arts to promote the exchange of knowledge and the creation of new alliances and research initiatives with innovative views of sustainability.

Caroline Lucas said: “I am very encouraged by the university’s new network and hope it will generate new ideas and ways to make sustainability constructive and real. I also hope that it will encourage other organisations to follow suit to help tackle the greatest threat we face.”

Susannah Hagan, Professor of Urban Studies in the School of Architecture and Design, said: "The facts of climate change, and the unsustainable human contribution to it, are gaining mainstream acceptance. At the same time, the term 'sustainability' is being used so indiscriminately, it now borders on the meaningless.

“The members of the Sustainability Network therefore promote a critical as well as a creative approach to the reconsideration of our relationship to the environment, and a recognition of its social and cultural complexity.”

The launch evening on October 15 will see presentations and demonstrations from Network members in university schools including fashion and textiles, fine arts, architecture, humanities, and 3D design.

To book seats, contact Michelle Wright at M.J.Wright@brighton.ac.uk, and for more information about the Network, contact Professor Hagan on s.k.hagan@brighton.ac.uk.
