Reapply for finance now

Published 21 February 2011

Full-time students heading back to university or college in autumn 2011 are being urged to reapply for their finance now.

This year, the government's Student Finance England has made the application process easier to complete, with simple instructions and guidance.

Undergraduate degree students can apply online at www.gov.uk/studentfinance and anyone needing assistance can contact the University of Brighton's Student Advice Service.

During National Student Money Week, 7–11 March, the service will be running stands on the Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings campuses to offer students essential advice on making their money work harder for them.

Helen Abrahams, of the Student Advice Service, said: "Many students do not understand what they are entitled to and what they are receiving. By contacting us we can do a quick 'wealth-check' and offer some income maximisation advice and money management tips. Being financially capable is a life skill that also aids retention and enhances employability."

Helen said: "Every year thousands of students get caught out by not applying for their funding in time. September may seem like an age away, but students need to return their declarations to Student Finance England by 30 June 2011 to guarantee payment at the start of the academic year.

"At least by applying now and getting it over and done with, it’s a worry off students' minds, and it leaves plenty of time for them to focus on studying and seeking employment over the summer months ahead."
