Raymond Williams and Robert Tressell in Hastings: celebrating 50 years of The Long Revolution and the centenary of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists.

A one day conference at the University of Brighton's campus in Hastings to celebrate the contribution of Williams and Tressell to literary and cultural studies, communications and social and political theory.

Keynote speakers
  • Professor Stuart Laing, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Brighton, author of Representations of Working Class Life
  • Howard Brenton, whose adapation of The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists for stage was performed at Liverpool Everyman and Chichester Festival Theatre
  • Professor Ian Haywood, University of Roehampton, author of Working-class Fiction: From Chartism to ‘Trainspotting’

Registration

The conference fee is £30 per delegate. This fee covers all refreshments during the day, including breaks, lunch and a networking session.

Please have your credit/debit card details to hand and advise us of any special dietary requirements when making your booking.

Accommodation and travel

There is a wide range of accommodation available in Hastings. If you require overnight accommodation, see the Visit 1066 website or contact the Hastings Tourist Information Centre on 01424 781111.

The conference will take place at Havelock Road, University of Brighton in Hastings TN34 1BE. You can find maps and directions to the university buildings here.

We strongly advise that you come to the conference by public transport. The venue is 3 minutes' walk from Hastings train station. There is paid parking in the centre of Hastings. If it is necessary to bring a vehicle then you can find car park locations on the Hastings council website.
