Inspiring future scientists

Published 2 February 2012

The university is one of the sponsors of this year's Brighton Science Festival which seeks to build bridges between science and people and inspire children to become involved in the discoveries of the future.

The science festival, which runs throughout February, is aimed at the general public, but specifically targets young people who are considering their options for the future.

Its series of family days get children and their parents involved in hands-on scientific experiments. The festival organisers said: "research shows children enjoy the subjects their parents are enthusiastic about".

The university offers a full range of science, engineering, health and technology subjects including courses in chemistry, computer science, pharmacy, geography and product design. Both its courses and research make a key contribution to the future of science and innovation.

The festival is now in its eighth year and mixes serious science with fun. This year's events include everything from a talk by Trevor Baylis, the inventor of the wind-up radio, a pocket science funfair and Big Science Saturday, where university students will be on hand with the latest fitness tests to see if you could be the next Paula Radcliffe or Usain Bolt.

Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Professor Andrew Lloyd said: "The university is proud to sponsor an event which we hope will inspire more children to continue with science after they leave school and to become involved in the kind of discoveries which will transform our future."
