Winter graduation

Published 8 February 2012

Graduands at this year's University of Brighton's winter award ceremonies will share the stage with Australian musician and writer, Nick Cave; the BBC's Director of News, Helen Boaden, and the popular children's author, Michael Rosen. Find out more about our three honorary graduates.

More than 1,800 University of Brighton students will graduate this February at Brighton Dome. Every success tells a story and here are just some of our tales...

Two students from the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, Mikin Patel and Victoria Miliou, were selected to address the UK Clinical Pharmacy Association conference. It is highly unusual and a real honour for undergraduate students to have the opportunity to present their research at this national conference.

Analytical chemistry with business student, Viet Linh Nguyen, has been chosen as one of 100 science, music and arts students from across Europe to join the Roche-Continents programme in Salzburg, Austria. The week-long program of workshops and concerts is intended to be a unique event exploring the common ground of creativity and innovation in the arts and science.

Christian Jobmann will take part in his third graduation ceremony at the University of Brighton this year when he receives a PhD from the Business School. He has already got a BA(Hons) in Business Studies and a masters in business process management.

Claire Hamer, who has earned a masters in fine art, collaborated with the microbiological team in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences to produce sculptures, video and photographs combining art with science for her masters exhibition. Some of this work was shown in the subsequent exhibition accompanying Professor Matteo Santin's inaugural lecture on tissue regeneration.

Armando Mendoza from Venezuela received a distinction in his masters in water and environmental management from the School of Environment and Technology. For his dissertation he joined Professor Huw Taylor on an exciting UNICEF funded project looking at ways to improve the provision of safe drinking water in rural Malawi.

The new graduates will collect their awards from the university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Julian Crampton, and the chairman of the Board of Governors, Lord Mogg.

Professor Crampton said: "Award ceremonies are very special days for the university. I am struck by the wealth of talent and the sense of community which exists at the university.

"Universities are about people and it is the students and staff of the university that make these ceremonies possible. For staff, this is a high point of the academic year – for graduates, it is a significant milestone. I would like to offer all the students my warmest congratulations."
