University rewarded for helping researchers

Published 24 February 2012

The University of Brighton has won a prestigious award from the European Commission in recognition of its work to promote the career development of researchers.

The university was chosen for the European HR Excellence in Research Award by a panel of distinguished experts, including Professor Sir Ivor Crewe, Master of University College Oxford and Chair of the Concordat Strategy Group.

The award recognises the strength of the university's Concordat implementation plan to support research careers at every stage.

Brighton is one of 12 new UK universities to be given the award. A total of 50 UK universities have so far been recognised for this work on promoting career development. The award acknowledges the universities' alignment with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for their Recruitment.

UK institutions are measured according to the Quality Assurance Agency's Code of Practice for Research Degree Programmes and the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers as well as ongoing national evaluation and benchmarking.

For the HR Excellence in Research Award, the University of Brighton will be listed on the European Commission website of acknowledged institutions and will be able to add the HR Excellence in Research logo to any publications or online material to show that its plans for career development are robust.

Professor Bruce Brown, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), said: "I am delighted that the University has received recognition for the work which it has done to date in implementing the Concordat. Our early career researchers are a valuable and vital part of our university community and will be of great strategic importance in realising our future research ambitions. Investment in this group of staff remains a priority for us even during times of financial constraint and, as our action plan for implementing the concordat demonstrates, there remains considerable work to be done."
