Dates announced for Brighton graduate show

Published 22 May 2012

Event 9–14 June 2012

Over 15,000 visitors will visit the biggest showcase of architecture, fine art, design, film and performance anywhere in the south-east.

After years of creative and critical study, in June over 500 final-year graduates from the Faculty of Arts will show their work at "Up and Beyond". This show will fill the university's campuses in Grand Parade and Pavilion Parade in Brighton. Works will be sold and graduates will receive commissions, as visitors search out those destined to follow the footsteps of alumni such as fashion designer Julien Macdonald OBE or Turner Prize winners such as Keith Tyson and Rachel Whiteread.

Students have been involved in all aspects of the show, from creating, hanging and building exhibition spaces, to designing the graphics. This year's campaign features fonts designed and donated by graduates Anthony Sheret and Edd Harrington of Brighton design studio 'The Entente'. There will be live performances, literary readings and interactive exhibitions, including outdoor pavilions built by second year architecture students using sustainable materials. Students studying broadcast media at the university's Hastings campus will interview artists about their work as their professional practice and will be featured on the faculty's website and broadcast on the university's Burst Radio during the shows.

The week will close on Thursday 14 June, with final year fashion and textile design students holding their catwalk show at London's Candid Arts Trust Galleries and the event is already sold out.

Graduates featured in recent shows have already become recognised names, such as Kyle Bean, Illustration BA(Hons) whose work has been commissioned by Selfridges, Diesel and the New York Times; Fred Butler, Fashion Design BA(Hons), whose fashion accessories have been worn by Lady Gaga and Sigur Ros; and Jade Pybus, Performance and Visual Art Music BA(Hons) whose compositions have featured in a Ford Focus advert and on NME.

Illustration BA(Hons)
Through staged set photography and on-location finds I hope to creating a sense of atmosphere, theme or message through bringing materials and objects together in different ways. The images often work alongside each other in a designed book form, or as moving image pieces.

Lisa Turner Wray

Sculpture BA(Hons)
Lisa’s work explores the social dynamics that can occur when an event is either witnessed or missed, the teasing creation of the inclusive and exclusive by an object, event, performance or architectural enhancement. There is an invitation to viewers to physically engage with objects and spaces, becoming performing participants.

Through the disruption of a careful formation of 2D ponchos, that instantly become 3D when used as garments, the Redi-Wear pieces boldly highlight audience members. These bright garments will then infiltrate public spaces where they will become an enigmatic viral presence. A natural choreography segregates the audience into roles, those that perform and those that are voyeurs.
