Royal visit to Falmer Sports Centre
Published 9 July 2012
The Earl and Countess of Wessex, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, visited the Falmer Sports Centre on 4 July, representing Her Majesty the Queen as part of the Diamond Jubilee tour.
The Earl and Countess earlier visited the American Express Community Stadium to learn more about the Albion in the Community initiative which uses the power of football to deliver health, education, disability and social inclusion projects in Sussex. They then attended a Powerchair football competition at Falmer Sports Centre where they were welcomed by Sarah Hogg, head of Sport and Recreation at the university, Chairman of Brighton and Hove Albion Tony Bloom and Alan Saunders, Joint Managing Director of Albion in the Community.
Sarah said: "It was an absolute honour to welcome the royal couple to the university Sports Centre. The university hosts many Albion in the Community events, but this one was even more special because of the royal guests."
The royal couple ended their visit with a reception at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton where they met local dignitaries including Vice-Chancellor Julian Crampton.
