Former MP honoured

Published 30 July 2012

A former MP David Lepper, described as a key mover behind Brighton and Hove's emergence as an "exceptional twenty-first century city", was awarded an honorary degree of Master of Laws last week (24 July) by the University of Brighton.

Professor Stuart Laing, the university's Deputy Vice-Chancellor, told a graduation awards ceremony at the Dome: "The city is recognised nationally and internationally as one of the most tolerant, progressive, dynamic and welcoming places to be in the whole of England.

"Its transformation over the past quarter of a century into one of the leading cultural centres and university cities of the UK has been both quite remarkable and wonderfully exhilarating to experience.

"Such changes happen because men and women strive to make them so – and David Lepper, who has served Brighton for over thirty years as a local and national politician of unswerving distinction and integrity, is such a man."

Mr Lepper said: "A great strength of the University of Brighton is its commitment to playing a central part not only in widening opportunities for our citizens but also in dealing with those challenges of change.

"And I am proud to be associated with it."
