Criminology graduate wins scholarship at Kings College London

Roxana Cavalcanti, a former undergraduate in the School of Applied Social Science, has just completed a masters in criminology and will start an Economic and Social Research Council-funded PhD at Kings College this October, studying human rights, violence and gangs in Brazil.

Roxana said: "I was very fortunate to have worked at the University of Brighton during my masters on a research project with a group of very senior academics, including two exceptional criminologists – Professor Peter Squires and Professor John Lea.

"This was probably the most useful and remarkable experience I will take away from the last two years. After my PhD I hope to work in the fields of social justice and positive social change."

Professor Squires, professor of criminology, said: "I am extremely pleased for Roxana. It is a great achievement to be awarded a Kings College scholarship – they are extremely hard to come by – and it goes some way to reward her for all of her hard work. Roxana has been an exceptional student and made a significant contribution to the school and university. I wish her every success for the future."
