Brighton's explosive science show

Published 10 December 2012

Event 14 December 2012

From exploding ostrich eggs to methane mambas, this year's University of Brighton science show Bigger Bang VII promises to be bigger and more explosive than ever.

Fronted by "chemistry evangelist" Hal Sosabowski, the university's professor of public understanding of science, the annual show aims to show that science isn’t just about diagrams and whiteboards.

Brimming with educational experiments and dazzling displays, the show takes place at 7.30pm in the university's new £23m Huxley Building in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, on 14 December.

Professor Sosabowski said: "This is a unique event with breath taking experiments the likes of which you will never see anywhere else. The event is an almost guaranteed way of getting children and also adults turned off games consoles and on to science."

He said the show, which attracts students, families and school pupils, aims to convey two important messages – chemistry is important in everyday life and is an interesting career choice.

He said: "Chemistry and the related sciences are essential to our lives and I believe it will be instrumental in tackling effectively some of the biggest challenges that face us in the future. There is a national shortage of students studying science subjects and I hope that this show will help to inspire the budding young scientists of the future."

Tickets cost £7 each or £24 for a family of four.
