TV student to promote legendary DJ

Published 18 January 2012

A TV production student has been given the chance to promote DJ Fatboy Slim's legendary Brighton gigs.

Bobby Thrower, who is based at the university's Hastings campus, will provide promotional ideas and be a member of the production crew for the fifth Big Beach Boutique gigs on 1 and 2 June.

The events are likely to be televised and/or turned into a DVD. Football fan Fatboy Slim usually holds his gigs on Brighton beach, but this year he has switched venues and is holding them at the new AMEX stadium, home of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Fatboy Slim, also known as former Brighton Polytechnic student, Norman Cook, has always been keen to keep in touch with the university so at the end of last year he invited Brighton students to submit ideas for promoting the June gigs.

The project was launched through the university alumni association's Brighton Futures initiative which exposes current students to the expertise of university alumni.

Bobby found out about the competition through his lecturer and submitted a host of ideas, including one based on a pastiche of the Wizard of Oz theme, 'there's no place like home'.

"Norman didn't actually want to use the Wizard of Oz theme," said Bobby, "but his management company loved it and may want to use it for another of their clients, so for the BB5 project we're going with something else."

Bobby, who is in his first year, grew up with Fatboy Slim's music since his mum is a big fan and has all his albums. "I'm incredibly excited to work with such a legend," he said.

"I'm only a few months into my course so I never expected to get such an unbelievable opportunity this early on, or even ever!"

The multimillion selling DJ, met with students from the university, including Bobby, to share his expertise and answer questions about the music industry, his stellar career as well as his time at the University of Brighton.

Bobby is studying the Television Production FdA in Hastings from the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts.
