Event 14 January 2013

The University of Brighton's river expert Professor Phil Ashworth has been invited to give a public lecture at the prestigious Monday Night Lecture Series at the Royal Geographical Society.

Big rivers dominate the world's landscapes and Professor Ashworth will use satellite images and field research to explain why. He will focus on the great rivers of Argentina, Bangladesh and Russia.

The lecture takes place on 14 January and is entitled: Why are the world's big rivers different? Professor Ashworth is the second geographer from the university to be invited to give a lecture at the society.

He said: "It is a privilege to be invited to present to such a distinguished audience at the Royal Geographical Society. The society is the world leader for the promotion of geography, sciences and discovery and this lecture gives me the opportunity to share my work with leading scientists, explorers and the public."

The society, founded in 1830, aims to "foster an understanding and informed enjoyment" of the world. Its outgoing president is Michael Palin and previous lecturers include Sir David Attenborough.

The lecture starts at 6.30pm at the Royal Geographical Society in London and is open to members and one guest. Members will also be able to view the lecture live on the Royal Geographical Society's website.
