Brighton's applications up for 2013

Published 4 February 2013

Applications for undergraduate courses taught at the University of Brighton are up four per cent compared to the same point in 2012. Brighton has received more than 30,000 applications so far for 2013 with notable increases for courses in engineering, computer science, illustration and medicine. A new course in law and criminology is also attracting strong interest.

The university's newest campus in Hastings, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, has seen a 25 per cent increase in applications. The campus is a centre for digital and broadcast media.

The university has also seen a 16 per cent increase in applications from students living in neighbourhoods where the fewest people go on to university.

Professor Stuart Laing, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: "The university has a long-standing commitment to widening participation in higher education, and this is evidenced by our work with individual students, primary and secondary schools in Sussex and beyond. We also offer a range of financial help to students through bursaries.

"We are very pleased that our strong academic reputation and our distinctive commitment to economic and social purpose continue to make us one of the country's most popular universities."
