Calling all alumni

Published 14 February 2013

The University of Brighton's annual telephone campaign begins this week (12 February) and aims to raise £80,000 for student support.

The campaign starts as Brighton celebrates its 21st year of enjoying university status and will link to Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day, a worldwide event in the fundraising sector on Thursday 28 February.

Last year's telethon raised around £45,000 and student callers spoke to nearly 3,000 former students.

This year the money raised will go to three key projects:

  • Recognising talent and rewarding achievement through prizes, sports scholarships and merit scholarships
  • Promoting opportunity and access including hardship funds, widening participation activities and the Hastings Aspiration Awards
  • Enhancing the student experience – for instance, through the Springboard Grants Programme, Sport Brighton, the Students' Union and employability funds.

Current students will ring alumni to find out what they are doing now and how they can help make a difference to the alumni of the future by giving a modest regular donation.

Director of Development and Alumni, Sam Davies said: "Donations from alumni and friends provide the university with sustainable funding for essential student support projects. By giving a small donation, alumni can really make a difference to the students who follow in their footsteps."

The six week campaign runs from 12 February until 22 March.
