Professor Richard Faragher from the University of Brighton and one of the country's leading experts on ageing is taking part in a debate on the subject at Oxford University.
Professor Faragher, professor of biogerontology and assistant head of the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, will go head-to-head with Dr Aubrey de Grey, author and theoretician in the field of gerontology and chief science officer of the SENS Research Foundation, which researches ageing.
Dr de Grey contends that senior scientists in the field of ageing have distorted the relationship between ageing and disease and that his research strategies will lead to the rapid development of rejuvenation therapies to combat ageing.
Professor Faragher, chair of the British Society for Research on Ageing, disputes these contentions and believes de Grey is "damaging the credibility of the field by linking his futuristic visions with the practical research strategies of the mainstream".
The debate A Cure for Ageing? takes place next Tuesday, 19 February, at Oxford University's Sheldonian Theatre. Entrance is free.
