Silver award for sustainability

The University of Brighton has received a silver award for introducing procedures to cut energy use and increase sustainable practices.

The award was announced by EcoCampus which runs a scheme launched in 2005 by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to help universities identify, evaluate, manage and improve environmental performances.

The silver award follows the university being placed third out of the country's 142 universities and other higher education institutions in the People & Planet's annual Green League for its work in shaping the university's transition to low-carbon, sustainable operations.

The university has also set a target of reducing carbon emissions by 50 per cent in five years.

Sue McHugh, the university's Director of Finance, said: "We are very pleased with the silver award but there is still work to do.

"The EcoCampus development process is split into four stages – bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. We passed the bronze audit last year and have now progressed and passed the silver phase.

"We are halfway through the process of developing a comprehensive environmental management system and we are committed to continuing the process by further reducing energy use and developing sustainable management systems in all of our buildings and campuses in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings."
