Accommodation
The agreement you sign for living in halls or a unihome commits you to staying in that accommodation for the duration of the tenancy. In certain circumstances it may be possible to break this agreement if another suitable student can be found to move in. Until this happens, however, the original occupant is liable for the rent.
First year students who have moved into halls or a unihome in September, may be eligible for a 1 week grace period starting on the first day of the rental contract, whereby you can leave your accommodation without liability (ie finding someone else to move in).
If you leave early or near the start of semester two (February) it may be possible to find a student to take your room relatively quickly, but if you leave later in the year it can be more difficult and you could end up paying rent on a room you are not using until the end of the tenancy period.

If you are living in private rented accommodation, you should refer to your tenancy agreement to find out how much notice you are committed to giving.
If you have signed a fixed term Assured Shorthold tenancy, you will be tied until the end of the fixed term. After this, one month's notice on your rental due date is required. If you are lodging with a landlord then you normally give notice according to the payment frequency (weekly, monthly).
If you stay in your private rented accommodation but are no longer a student you will need to start paying Council Tax.
