The amount of time students spend on their studies will vary according to the course, though the expectation is that a full-time student should allow the same amount of time for study as for any other full-time job – that is, at least 35 hours a week. Some of this time will be taken up by formal sessions but a substantial amount will be independent study.
Students need space in which to study, if possible this should be comfortable, quiet and have good light. Ideally it would be large enough to set out books and folders that do not then have to be cleared away every day, and include some storage for files and books.
How you can help.
If your student is living at home, it may be possible for you and your student to negotiate tasks – such as childminding or housework so that there are clear time allocations for each. This will allow the student to plan their time better.
