Biology and biomedical sciences brings together academic staff involved with the teaching of ecology and biogeography, biology, biomedical science and microbiology.
Courses
Honours degrees (BSc Hons)
The division is a major contributor to the BSc programmes in Biomedical Science, Ecology and Biological Sciences. Division staff also provide specialist teaching for the microbiology component of the MPharm programme and years 1 and 2 of the Brighton and Sussex Medical School curriculum.
Accreditation
The division has strong links with professional and academic bodies through the Institute of Biomedical Science, the Institute of Biology and the Biochemical Society, and members are actively engaged in accreditation events and external examining for similar courses at other UK universities.
Research
Biology and biomedical sciences is also the focus for researchers within the fields of:
- Disease processes
- Biomedical materials
- Microbiology
- Biogeography and Ecology
- Bioscience education
Current research programmes include development of novel biomaterials and tissue engineering constructs for use in medical devices and therapies, investigation of mechanisms of cell senescence and progression of diseases such as cystic fibrosis, the investigation of antibiotic resistance, and mammal behaviour and plant population ecology.
