  • Studies into the basic disease mechanisms involved in the development and progression of diabetes mellitus.
  • Development of novel methods for the prevention and treatment of diabetes and its complications.
  • The application of gene therapy to the treatment of diabetes.
  • Identification and characterisation of genes associated with autoimmune disease.
  • The role of cellular defence and repair mechanisms in autoimmune disease.
  • Target specific therapy of autoimmune disease.
  • Cellular and molecular aspects of the aetiology and pathogenesis of diabetes.
  • The characterisation of the inflammatory processes involved in target specific islet cell destruction .
  • Islet cell growth and differentiation.
