Dr Irina Savina joined the University of Brighton in May 2007, from the University of Lund in Sweden. Her research interests cover a number of fields in the polymer chemistry and material science. She is a specialist in design and development of macroporous polymer gels, so called cryogels, which have attracted increasing interest as carriers of chromatography, protein synthesis, tissue engineering and others. Dr. Savina has extensive experience in macroporous gel preparation, controlling the pore structure in porous polymer material and in developing new methods of modification of the pore surface e.g. graft polymerization. She is currently focusing on preparation of new macroporous gels for biomedical and environmental applications, as well as studying factors controlling the pore structure in porous polymer gels and developing new methods of soft material assessment.
