Before joining the University of Brighton, I have spent the past 13 years as part of the nutrition team at the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a geographically-based cohort of over 10000 mothers and children in the Bristol area. I have worked across a range of related projects, including the determinants of blood lipid levels, diet, growth and obesity, the relationship between size at birth and later body composition, determinants of iron status, the effects of breastfeeding on the mother and child, social determinants of diet quality, pregnancy diet and birth outcome, and diet and the insulin-like growth factor system. I have a particular interest in dietary determinants of chronic disease risk factors in childhood. I was also the principal investigator on a World Cancer Research Fund grant aiming to improve understanding of the mechanisms linking early menarche (the age at which a girl starts her
periods) to breast cancer risk by investigating how diet, physical activity and body composition interact to affect pubertal development in girls.
