Research Interests
My research interests span from the synthesis of new biomaterials to the functionalization of biomaterial surfaces with biomimetic molecules and to the testing of their biocompatibility.
Amongst the approaches characterising my research activity within the School of Pharmacy, the development of novel in vitro methods able to simulate accurately the in vivo conditions and minimise the use of animal models has to be highlighted. For example, I have established models to study the formation of mineral phase on the implant surfaces and, in general, to study their biocompatibility (i.e. protein adsorption, inflammatory cell activation, tissue cells adhesion, spreading and proliferation) in clinically-reflective models. Dental, orthopaedic, cardiovascular and urological implants are usually studied by these models.

Patents
Co-inventor of new osteointegrative biomaterials. The data, protected by the PCT, arose from a BRITE-EURAM programme (LIPOSTIN). A second patent on this topic is in preparation.
Co-inventor with the University of Naples of a new class of biodegradable biomaterials from soybean curd of use in the field of biomaterials and drug delivery. The data are protected by the PCT/GB01/03464.
