Worthing High School students were given the opportunity of visiting the University of Brighton’s School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular sciences for a ‘Microscope Masterclass’.   During their visit students received a seminar on the different types of microscopy in use here at the University and how these are used in both diagnostic and research contexts.  Students were then taught how to use instruments so that they could image their own samples which included some lively microbes.

As well as enjoying the laboratory facilities in the school’s brand new Huxley building they also got the unique opportunity to see the new electron microscopes in action, in the image analysis suite thanks to Dr Gary Phillips and Dr Jon Salvage and Dr Angela Sheerin gave them a tour of the tissue culture facilities and the research lab she runs in order to demonstrate how fluorescence microscopy forms an essential part of her research.

Overall the students had an excellent day and hopefully we will have a few future scientists in the making.
