Aamira Iqbal, a PhD student in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, has been selected as one of only 60 researchers nationally to present her research in the Biological and Biomedical Science Section at the prestigious SET for BRITAIN exhibition and reception. This event, sponsored by Mr Andrew Miller MP, will be held in the House of Commons Terrace Marquee on Monday 14 March 2011 during National Science and Engineering Week.
Aamira works with Dr Lizzy Ostler on a joint EPSRC/BBSRC SPARC and P&BS-funded project entitled the Chemical Analysis of Ageing Tissue in Drosophila Melanogaster, as part of a collaboration with Professor Dame Linda Partridge at University College London.
SET for BRITAIN (organised by the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics and the Society of Biology) showcases the work of early career researchers to Members of Parliament and other distinguished guests. The presenters are considered to represent the best in each field and the overall winner, selected by judges during the two hour session, will receive a prestigious Medal and a substantial monetary prize. SET for BRITAIN Awards are made solely on the basis of the very best research work and results by an early-stage or early-career researcher.
"The overall aim of SET for BRITAIN is to encourage, support and promote Britain's early-stage and early-career research scientists, engineers and technologists who are the "engine-room" of continued progress in and development of UK research and R&D, and ultimately of UK PLC. Many will be Britain's future scientific and technological leaders and others will clearly be leaders in other fields. Such researchers are a vital asset and investment for the UK."
