Organised by STEMSussex, the event is part of the Big Bang programme, the biggest single celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for young people in the UK.

Over 30 organisations, including ‘blue-chip’ companies such as Southern Water, Cisco and CGGVeritas took part in the Crawley event. Collectively their interactive stands and hand-on workshops engaged hundreds of students aged 9 to 19. The event also contained various competitions which provided schools and students with the opportunity to showcase their science.

Various members of the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences took part in the event, either demonstrating on the interactive stand, acting as a judge or creating a show.  One of the team, lecturer Dr Bhavik Patel, said,

“Our interactive exhibit aimed to inspire students with the science we conduct within the School. With our theme of ‘We are what we eat’ we showcased the interaction of food and physiology.

Our demonstrations were really popular, to the extent that we were all losing our voices by the end of the day! And it was highly inspiring to see future generations of scientists, all enthused with the various elements of STEM on display.”
