Professor Stuart Laing
Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Professor Laing has lead responsibility for teaching, learning and research, including academic standards, quality assurance, home/EU student recruitment, FE college partnerships and development of the Hastings campus of the University of Brighton. He chairs the Academic Standards Committee and is line manager for the deans of faculty and the Head of the Strategic Planning Office, the Head of Internal Audit, and the Centre Director of the University of Brighton in Hastings.
Dr Angela Macadam
Head of Practice - School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Science
Angela Macadam obtained a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacy in 1985. She undertook a pre-registration year of training at Brighton General Hospital and became a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 1986. Angela continued working as a hospital pharmacist while she worked on her PhD which looked at novel drug delivery systems between 1986 and 1990.
She was a post-doctoral scientist for a year with GlaxoSmithKline before obtaining her first lecturing position in pharmaceutics at the University of Brighton in 1991. In 1997, Angela changed from pharmaceutics to pharmacy practice and is now Head of Pharmacy Practice.
Dr Matt Ingram
Admissions Tutor - School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Science
Matt has been at the University of Brighton for 12 years, first as a lecturer, then as senior lecturer and most recently promoted to a Principal Lecturer from September 2012. His background is in Medicinal Chemistry both as an undergraduate and postgraduate.
Matt's roles at the University have ranged from teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting research, course leadership, supervising research students and consultancy. He has also been heavily involved for a number of years in the admissions process across a range of courses. Currently Matt is the admissions tutor for the MPharm programme.
Dr Tim Katz
Principal Lecturer - School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics
Dr Tim Katz is the final year tutor and admissions tutor for the product design portfolio of courses within the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics. He has considerable experience of Higher Education from more than 30 years here at Brighton, and has evolved from a Doctorate in Solid-State Physics to a much more holistic stance within product design, where a synergy of hard and soft skills can to come together to provide surprisingly powerful outcomes.
Tim believes in partnership, between industry, academics and students. Relevant activities can make student development realistic and valid assessments make their achievements valuable to employers and clients. We try to broker industry clients to provide strategic project briefs to enhance the student engagement.
Sam Rhodes
Head of Careers - Brighton Business School
Sam manages the Careers Service at the University of Brighton. The service helps students and graduates move successfully from university to employment or further study. There are four main strands to the service including:
- Guidance
- Employment
- Volunteering
- Enterprise
Students and graduates can receive help in many ways depending on their circumstances. Through Guidance and Employment they can get information on career opportunities and help with their application techniques, or from Volunteering and Enterprise they can get important transferable skills.
The Careers Service works in partnership with many academic schools and central departments and is an important part of the university's employability and enterprise strategy.
Dr Denise Martin
Course Leader - School of Applied Social Science
Dr Denise Martin is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and course leader of the BA(Hons) Social Science and BA(Hons) Criminology and Social Policy at the University of Brighton. She teachers on both the undergraduate and postgraduate criminology degrees, and specialises in the field of criminal justice, specifically policing and prisons. Previous roles have included admissions tutor and she is currently Widening Participation Co-ordinator for the School of Social Sciences. This role includes encouraging non-traditional students into education.
Dr Martin is particularly interested in encouraging mature students into Higher Education. She has also worked with AimHigher and given lectures and seminars on the subject of crime to a number of external groups to demonstrate the benefits of pursuing a degree.
Mark Bhatti
Reader - School of Applied Social Science
Mark Bhatti is a Reader at the School of Applied Social Science. Mark is also currently co-ordinating a research project titled “Methodological Innovations I: Using Mass Observation”.
His research interests lies in the areas of:
- Sociology of memory
- Home, gender and home-making
- Leisure, gardens and gardening
- Psychosocial studies
- Embodiment and resistance
- Ageing and the life course.
He also teaches across a range of modules at the School of Applied Social Science including social theory, culture and society, leisure, the body and society and globalisation.
Professor Anne Boddington
Dean of the Faculty of Arts
Anne Boddington, Professor of Design Innovation, is Dean of the Faculty of Arts. She first joined the faculty in January 1999 as the founding Head of the School of Architecture & Design (1999-2006) and has been Dean since 2006. From 2005-2010 she was also Director of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design (CETLD). Educated and qualified as an Architect and subsequently as a Cultural Geographer.
She currently leads a faculty of circa 3,900 students and circa 400 staff with a broad portfolio that includes the Visual and Performing Arts; Architecture; Design; Media Studies; Literature; Languages; and Humanities. She is also Co-director of the ADM HEA Subject Centre, which we are proud to host at the University.
Karen Norquay
Head of the School of Art, Design and Media
Karen Norquay is head of the School of Art, Design and Media. A photographer, she has received commissions by major newspapers and magazines, worked with the Crafts Council and a range of other public bodies, exhibited nationally and has work held in private collections.
She is committed to developing educational partnerships with local, national and international institutions. A trustee of the Brighton Photo Biennial, she has served on and chaired committees in art and design, has extensive experience of external examining and has also acted as a consultant for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. She is committed to ensuring and maintaining academic standards.
Annie Carroll
Equality and Diversity Adviser
Annie Carroll has been working as the Equality and Diversity Adviser (Student Experience) since 2009 on a variety of projects linked to the promotion of equality and diversity within the university. As part of Student Services, her project plan is determined both by UK legislation and Higher Education Good Practice on the one hand, and by student feedback on the other, to ensure the university’s policies and day-to-day practices are inclusive.
Her main focus is students, although often student and staff experiences of equalities are intrinsically linked.
Tim Rose
Admissions Tutor - School of Education
"In 1998, after a successful career as a primary school teacher, Tim moved in to Higher Education as a Senior Lecturer in Primary Science. Since then he has worked in two different university settings and has taught on both undergraduate and postgraduate training routes.
Throughout this time he has been deeply involved with the admissions process, taking up the role of Senior Admissions Tutor in the School of Education here at Brighton in 2009. This role sees him monitoring recruitment and admissions procedures across all of our initial teacher training routes, as well as other routes within the school.
Dr Stephen Hogan
Head of Undergraduate Programmes - Brighton Business School
Dr Stephen Hogan is Head of Undergraduate Programmes and an Assistant Head of School at the Brighton Business School having previously been a course leader for various business courses over the last decade. Prior to joining the University he enjoyed a successful career in international marketing with both SME’s and multi-nationals, most recently with Parker Pens where he was responsible for their European distributor business.
He has conducted business in many parts of the world including the Far East, Middle East, Africa and Europe. He has extensive experience of teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional levels and has written and presented papers on a variety of key marketing issues of international concern, particularly in the area of corporate social responsibility.
Dr Dan Burdsey
Admissions Tutor - Chelsea School of Sport
Dan obtained an Upper Second Class BSc (Hons) in Sport and Recreation Studies (University of Birmingham, 1998), an MA (Distinction) in Sociology of Sport (University of Leicester, 1999) and a PhD in Sociology (Brunel University, 2004).
He teaches a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules related to the sociology of sport, leisure and popular culture. Dan is the head of undergraduate admissions for the school and chairs the admissions forum. He is also on the editorial board for Sport in Society and International Sport Studies.
Dan has discussed his research in a number of media outlets, including BBC Radio Four, BBC Radio Five Live, BBC Radio Asian Network, BBC Radio West Midlands, Radio Ramadan Edinburgh and The Islam Channel.
Ian Carter
Student Services Manager
Ian Carter has been the Student Services Manager with responsibility for the Disability & Dyslexia Team and the Student Advice Service for the past 11 years. These services are provided at all 5 University campuses and entail supporting students with disabilities, dyslexia and mental health difficulties, alongside providing students with advice on a range of welfare and financial related issues.
Ian also has responsibility for managing the international ddvice and support service, additional funding such as the Access to Learning Fund and the Study Skills programme
