The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design (CETLD) is a unique venture bringing together object based learning in Higher Education and Museums.

CETLD was led by the university's Faculty of Arts in collaboration with the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A), the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Royal College of Art (RCA).

It was developed to extend educational and research opportunities to reach all partners focusing specifically on object scholarship and object-based learning explored through and across the archives and collections of all partners.

Art and Design students learn not just from formal in-house university environments, in different places and environments and from a huge variety of sources and institutions. Some students have worked with staff members as part of research projects, established their own projects and others have gone on to find work in museums. The network of collaborating bodies has continued to grow both in the UK and abroad and learning spaces have been designed and rethought to facilitate these new kinds of interaction.

CETLD has supported more than 40 projects from across the partnership. It has developed and tested new products and services and the development of spaces that support learning interfaces between all kinds of creative learning and that has challenged the relative position of formal university learning and how it engages less formal learning in other places and spaces.
