Tackling health inequalities in Europe
We are witnessing an unprecedented growth in health inequalities both in and between countries in Europe. Brighton researchers are contributing to current knowledge about public health policies to tackle these health inequalities.
In particular, the Gradient Project is examining public health policies that focus on families and children. Research evidence has illustrated that inequalities experienced during childhood have negative long-term effects on health and wellbeing.
The Center for Health Research (CHR) has been successful in obtaining funding for a major research project entitled Tackling the Gradient: applying public health policies to effectively reduce health inequalities amongst families and children. It is funded by DG Research of the European Commission under its Framework 7 Programme. The multi-million euro project involves 34 members from 12 universities, research institutes and public health agencies across Europe.
Professor John Kenneth Davies and Dr Nigel Sheriff from CHR are developing a framework to monitor and evaluate public health policies and their impact on the social determinants that create health inequalities. Brighton's work is leading on evaluation and will recommend public health policy options that tackle inequalities in health determinants among families and children. Findings and recommendations from the Gradient Project will be focused on both European and national government policy makers.
