Human-powered flight

Published 20 April 2012

A University of Brighton senior lecturer is due to appear on BBC One's Bang Goes the Theory on Monday 23 April at 7.30pm, helping with experiments on human-powered flight.

Dr Gary Brickley, from the university's Chelsea School of Sport, recently conducted laboratory assessments on the programme's presenter Jem Stansfield to see how much power he was capable of producing and to test his fitness.

Dr Brickley said: "The main project is about him building and flying a human-powered plane. I also went to the airfield to help him try to get it off the ground. It is a science-based show with various challenges.

"We will be looking at Jem's fitness but also considering some of the reasons that limit people's ability to exercise."
