This research programme is situated in a key moment in the trajectory of British and international business and economic development.
It addresses, from the distinctive perspective of design history, substantive debates about the nature of commercial, particularly corporate, development and the role within that of design strategies and product differentiation and development. It specifically examines the considerable tensions between national and international interests as the relationship between design and manufacturing processes has changed on account of the widening geographical spread and mobility of low-cost labour markets and the rapid development and dissemination of new production technologies and strategies. The interaction of design education with these processes, as well as the mediating role of governments, including international governmental structures such as the EU, are likely to be a significant dimension of this doctoral programme. Original proposals are welcome and will be judged on their intrinsic merits.
It is anticipated that the project will focus on two industries of choice as key case studies. These would make use of the National Archives at Kew, the CBI Archives, the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick, the National Archive of Art & Design at Olympia, and the Design Archives at the University of Brighton.
Candidates are likely to be graduates with a background and strong interest in one or more of the following fields: the history of design, design studies, business studies, business history or economic history. They will have a Masters level qualification or equivalent.
Proposed Supervisory Team
The supervisory team will include two experienced supervisors with more than 40 successful doctoral completions at Brighton, nationally and internationally: Professor Jonathan M Woodham, Director of the Centre for Research & Development (Arts & Humanities) and Dr Paddy Maguire, Head of the School of Humanities. Both have established expertise in the proposed research field. Depending on the nature of proposal put forward for consideration it is possible that additional expertise may be sought from elsewhere in the University, such as the Business School.
