Work-based Higher Education is a research field which influences the reform of HE internationally.
A concern of policy makers, both nationally and internationally, has been the need to raise skill levels and increase the proportion of employees with high level skills, and this has been justified in terms of successful competition in the global economy. This concern has resulted in the growth of employee development through higher education-supported work based learning in the form of (usually) part-time HE provision which incorporates worker/students workplace experience explicitly within the learning programme.
At a time of national and international adjustment to economic conditions, the interaction between the Academy and the workplace requires close scrutiny to inform effective development of policy and practice in this area. The School of Education seeks PhD proposals which aim to increase our understanding of the interaction between higher education-supported work-based learning and the workplace and the conditions necessary for effective learning and skills utilisation. The successful proposal will employ mixed-method research approaches to exploring in depth whether, and how, work-based higher education contributes to employees’ effective use of knowledge and skills in the workplace to generate models and frameworks for effective Academy – workplace interaction which can inform policy and practice in national and international contexts.
The supervision team has extensive experience in research and practice in the area of work-based and workplace learning and associated pedagogies for enhancing the learning affordances of work. Other senior researchers in the Education Research Centre have expertise in narrative research methodology and ethnographic approaches to the study of work and learning. The wide range of work-based professional development programmes within the University of Brighton offers opportunities to work with researchers from a range of disciplines.
