Applications are invited for a PhD research project that addresses the relationship between Ageing, Care and Technology. There are no restrictions on the type of technologies to be examined or on the social or organisational context within which the ageing-care-technology relationship is examined but applicants should be social scientists with experience of thinking critically about ageing, care and/or technologies.
The successful applicant will work within the School of Applied Social Science’s Care, Health and Well-being (CHEW) research cluster (http://www.brighton.ac.uk/sass/research/clusters/care-health-wellbeing/ ) which is distinctive in having multi and interdisciplinary expertise in social policy, social informatics and social care practice. We have substantial interest in the ethical, practice and policy implications of the use of technology in providing care for older people, and the potential of diverse forms of social media for enabling older people to sustain and develop communications and relationships that enhance their well-being. We are looking for applicants with proposals that fit this research agenda. CHEW has very well developed collaborations with local statutory and voluntary agencies working in the ageing arena and in the health and social care sectors and we would be particularly interested in candidates with proposals for collaborative approaches to research.
The lead supervisor will be Flis Henwood, Professor of Social Informaticshttp://www.brighton.ac.uk/sass/contact/details.php?uid=fh25. Co-supervision will be provided by colleagues working in age and ageing and/or social informatics areas, depending on the precise focus of the proposed project. Potential co-supervisors are Dr Lizzie Ward and Dr Mary Darking.
