Entry requirements
Academic and English language entry requirements.
Students whose first language is not English will need to provide evidence of their English language ability.
Applicants for professional doctorates will normally be expected to be working at a senior level within their profession and have a recognised masters degree or equivalent relevant to the proposed programme of study, or appropriate research or professional experience which resulted in published work, written reports or other appropriate evidence of accomplishment.
PhD study normally requires a recognised masters degree or equivalent relevant to the proposed programme of study, or appropriate research or professional experience which resulted in published work, written reports or other appropriate evidence of accomplishment.
MPhil study normally requires a first or second class honours degree or recognised equivalent relevant to the proposed programme of study, or appropriate research or professional experience.
English language proficiency
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- For Arts and Architecture, Business School, Chelsea School of Sport, Service Management: 7.0 overall, 7 for the writing, and none below 6.
- Health Professions: 7.0 overall and none below 6.5.
- For Engineering and Environment: 6.0 overall and minimum 5.5 for the writing.
- For all other subjects: 6.5 overall and minimum 6 for the writing.
Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (IBTOEFL)
- Maximum score is 120 with a minimum requirement score of 90 for postgraduate entry. No significant weakness in any of the four scores that make up the total.
- (IBTOEFL scores must have been obtained within the preceding two years.)
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
- A-C.
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE)
- A-B.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
- Language B at Higher level grade 4 or Language B at Standard level grade 5.
Hong Kong Advanced Level (HKAL)
- A-C.
University of Michigan Certificate in English Language Proficiency
- Pass with 70 per cent across all assessments.
Please note that Cambridge First Certificate of English (FCE), Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC), General Certificate in Secondary Education (GCSE), and Hong Kong Certificate in Education (HKCEE) are not acceptable.
