Research award: PhD

PhD candidates are required to critically investigate an approved supervised topic and to demonstrate an understanding of research methods appropriate to their chosen field.

The investigation should result in the creation and interpretation of knowledge which makes an original contribution to knowledge and places the student at the forefront of their research field.

The average period of study for a PhD is 3 years full time or 5 years part time.

The PhD is assessed via the submission of a thesis between 40,000 and 80,000 words depending on the subject area and a viva voce (oral examination).

It is expected that where a thesis is accompanied by other material, such as exhibited work, it will be shorter in length.
