Biography

Dr Palmer is a social anthropologist within the tourism team where she teaches in the area of social anthropology and tourism. Examples of modules include Tourism, Landscape and Materiality, Tourism and Visual Culture and also Research Methods.

Dr Palmer was awarded her PhD in 1999 for research on Englishness and heritage tourism. Subsequent research, publications and conference papers (including invited presentations) have consolidated and extended this focus under the overarching theme of Tourism, Space and Place.

Research within this theme explores how tourist space is 'used' - imagined, remembered and memorialized. Encounters with the buildings, monuments, objects and 'things' of space and place can reveal much about the ways in which tourism mediates knowledge and understanding of self, other and the wider world.

Dr Palmer has been supervising research students to completion since 2000. She is keen to encourage applications focusing on projects that align with the above theme. Potential applicants are warmly encouraged to contact Dr Palmer for an informal chat prior to submitting an application.
