Biography

Prior to joining the school, Mike gained considerable commercial management experience in the transport and tour operating business. His last senior management appointment was for a conglomerate subsidiary, which had a sales turnover of £15m pa and carried approximately 25,000 holidaymaker's per year.

Mike joined the school to develop the strategic marketing and business strategy elements of the degree programmes, offering a special focus on transport marketing and general customer care. He has also sat on academic course development teams for the English Tourist Board, EdExcel and the Chartered Institute of Transport.

Mike has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Studies and an MBA. He also holds full membership by examination of the Institute of Travel & Tourism; Chartered Institute of Transport; and Chartered Institute of Marketing. This is supported by his EU Road Transport Managers Licence and the prestigious “Chartered Marketer” award.

Scholarly Activities

Through his love of traveling, Mike has become an expert in destination marketing, which has supported his book, “The World Travel Atlas, ” now in its ninth edition, with worldwide sales of 170,000 copies. He continues to write articles on worldwide road passenger transport marketing issues as well as his highly specialised study of circus transport. He writes frequently for the Chartered Institute of Transport’s journal on the bus industry and has been interviewed by the BBC a number of times.

Mike continues his connections with industry as a non-executive director of a bus company in the north of England. He also undertakes consultancy work which has recently taken him to Namibia, Ecuador, Romania, and Australia.
