Biography

Nigel completed his Ph.D. in 2006 at the University of Brighton, which examined the meaning of sport in the lives of Canadian and British men. The research critically aids in understanding how the lived experiences of gay men taking part in sport relate to and inform relevant hegemonic and queer theoretical debates. He concluded that gay men are not overtly challenging traditional forms of hegemonic masculinity and sporting institutions as a whole, although on many occasions they subtly contest and disrupt these conservative ideological notions through their (queer) embodied practices.

Nigel undertook his M.A. in Leisure Management at the University of Sheffield (1996) and his B.A.A. in Geography at Ryerson University in Toronto (1986). He worked for 6 years as a consultant specializing in tourism, recreation and cultural master plans and feasibility studies in Toronto before returning to academia in England where he has lectured from 1996 to the present.

Nigel has a keen interest in gender and sexuality issues in leisure and tourism.  Along with his colleagues Dr. Clare Weeden and Jo-Anne Lester, he is currently working on a series of research papers related to lesbian and gay men's perceptions of the cruise industry in general as well as the gay cruise sector specifically.  The research is based on a survey of 171 lesbian, gay and bisexual people from around the globe, as well as a series of in-depth interviews.  Further research and teaching interests relate to sport tourism, sport and event sponsorship, the economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts of tourism, attractions management, the politics associated with tourism planning, leisure management and research methods. He has also helped to develop a web-based theme park simulation for his students as part of his teaching.

Consultancy

Consultancy activities have recently included working for Eastbourne Borough Council on annual research focusing on the economic impacts of five major events (Airbourne, Hastings Direct International Tennis Championships, Xtreme, Beer Festival and Magnificent Motors) held in the town. Each event report further focused on issues such as sponsorship recall, changes in destination image, and visitor satisfaction.
