Biography

Geography and Sociology BA (Hons), (Marjons, University of Exeter); Sports Science, Fitness & Health MSc(University of Essex); Exercise Psychology PhD (University of Brighton); PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.

Sarah is a senior lecturer on the Sport and Exercise Science degree. She teaches predominantly in exercise psychology including: exercise adherence, psychological well-being, exercise referral schemes, and health behaviour change. Sarah also teaches qualitative research methods.

Her research has contributed to the National Quality Assurance Framework (DOH, 2001) for exercise referral schemes in terms of understanding best practice and the training needs of exercise practitioners within them. In terms of consultancy, she has delivered a training course to health professionals working in exercise referral schemes in London.

More recently, she has advised a NHS trust on training methods for exercise practitioners/nurses in facilitating exercise behaviour change. Sarah has also advised the trust on tools to measure exercise related psychological predictors and outcomes, in addition to exercise consultation strategies.

Sarah has experience and expertise in both qualitative and quantitative (RCT's) research.

Sarah is a reviewer for the following Journals: Journal of Sports Science; Psychology of Sport and Exercise; Psychology and Health; Health Psychology; Qualitative Research in Sport and Exercise; Family Practice; Patient Education and Counselling; Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice and other health related journals. Sarah is also a reviewer for the Medical Research Council.

Sarah has also led a large randomised controlled trial of a Primary-care based physical activity and healthy eating intervention funded by Eastbourne Downs and Weald Primary Care Trust (£30k) and a 12-month follow-up assessment funded by Pfizer (£12k).
