Senior lecturer at the School of Sport and Service Management Dr Gary Brickley has been awarded a Mussabini Medal at the Sports Coach UK awards. The medal is in recognition of coaches that have coached athletes to outstanding success on the world stage.

This year coaches to gold medallists at the Olympic and Paralympic games were given the honour.

Gary is coach to Great Britain para-cyclists; Sarah Storey, David Stone and Darren Kenny, who have won multiple gold medals at the Paralympics in Beijing and London.

The Mussabini medal is given to those recognised by Sports Coach UK for exceptional contribution to coaching and is part of the coaching hall of fame. Previous winners of the award include Sir Alf Ramsey, Sir Alex Ferguson and Duncan Fletcher.

Gary was awarded the medal by the minister for sport at a ceremony in London with Sir Chris Hoy and Princess Anne present.

Gary was pleased to be awarded the medal. He said: “It was quite a surprise to win the award but having coached Paralympic cyclists to five gold medals at the London Games and eight gold medals in Beijing it was a huge honour.”
