Local community groups have been using student volunteers for a number of years. A recent example is the St George’s Day Parade by the Scouting Association where students marched in uniform alongside the students they work with.

One group who have actively recruited student volunteers from the university is the 6th Eastbourne – Ascham St Andrews’ scout group.
Graham Spacey, project officer at Chelsea School of Sport said: “We have had one or two students volunteer to help out with 6th Eastbourne since 2000 independently. In the past two years we entered into a more formal agreement with 6th Eastbourne to recruit student volunteers and the response has been fantastic.”
Ashley Whymant-Morris, the group scout leader has said the students have already made a significant difference to the group . He said: “We now have five extra volunteers leading weekly sessions and a number of ‘occasional helpers’ who help out when they can. This has allowed us to expand both Scouts (Year 6-8) and Cubs (Year 3-6) and open up a Beavers Colony (Year 1-3)”.
