More than 100 university students and 200 school pupils took part in a dance extravaganza on 14 January 2012

Students from the University of Brighton’s Chelsea School of Sport in Eastbourne and the South Downs School Sport Partnership showcased their talents in an evening of contemporary dance entitled “Target Dance”, at the Congress Theatre, in Eastbourne.

University students have worked in partnership with local schools and have led a series of creative projects with local children, culminating in this one night show.

Schools which took part were: Hailsham Community College, Hazel Court School, Pevensey and Westham C.E. Primary School, Ratton School, Seaford Head Community College, Stafford Junior School, St John’s Mead C of E Primary School, Stone Cross School, The Bishop Bell C of E School, and The St Leonards Academy.

The event featuered the assessment and extracurricular dance work of Chelsea School of Sport students, the University’s KICK-START (all male) and FIDGET (all female) dance companies performed. Students are all undergraduate Physical Education teacher training students from Chelsea School of Sport.

Fiona Smith, principal lecturer at Chelsea School of Sport, said: “Target Dance provides exciting opportunities. It allows pupils to experience the thrills of working in a large-scale theatre and for students from the university to experience the responsibility, challenges and rewards of choreographing and presenting work with children.

“This is the first time our first years will all perform as part of their introductory dance module. Also, the show will include our first integrated piece – with pupils from Hazel Court School and second year students dancing on stage together.”
