Funding Grant Success

Dr Mark Doidge has been successful in winning a research grant from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Dr Doidge is a lecturer at the University of Brighton’s School of Sport and Service Management and teaches on a wide range of undergraduate modules related to the sociology of sport, politics and sports policy.
The prestigious UEFA Research Grant, worth €20,000, will enable Dr Doidge to complete his research titled ‘How does anti-racist activism by fans challenge racism and xenophobia in European football? The grant will enable him to conduct fieldwork in Italy, Germany and Poland to see how fans and fan-led anti-racist organisations understand racism in football and try to challenge its emergence in the stadiums. It will also look for strategies that can be used across the three countries, and potentially, across Europe.
The UEFA research grant will be significant in maintaining the reputation of the School of Sport and Service management as centre of excellent in football-related research.
