Institute chief gives inspiration to hospitality students

Hospitality students were privileged to hear an inspirational talk from one of the most important and influential leaders of the hospitality industry.
Chief executive of the Institute of Hospitality Peter Ducker took part in a presentation at the School of Sport and Service Management’s Eastbourne campus to inform students about the institute’s work and how it can be of benefit to them.
The institute is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and Mr Ducker is new to his role as chief executive. Looking ahead, he says one of his key aims is to build on existing policies and initiatives - such as the Education Management Scheme (EMS) - which provide encouragement, support and opportunity to the young talent entering the industry.
Through the EMS, of which the University of Brighton is a member, the institute ensures that all member colleges and universities align themselves to the highest professional practices within the industry, particularly with regard to standards of teaching and content of courses. In this way, the EMS upholds the professionalism and skills of future industry workers and maintains the relevance and contemporary nature of subjects taught to them.
The institute helps in other ways too, for example, by allowing both teaching staff and students to easily keep abreast of the latest industry news and developments, and by giving them access to a network of experts in hospitality related fields. Furthermore, through EMS membership, materials from the institute can be used in teaching and course planning, and students can read online books and ejournals free of charge, which is of enormous help when carrying out research or working on projects and dissertations.
Peter Ducker presentation in Greynore
Students attending the presentation in the Greynore building said they found Mr Ducker’s talk very informative, helping them understand the role the Institute of Hospitality can play not only in assisting with their studies while at university, but also in developing their careers after graduation and on into the future.
PhD hospitality student Rodrigo Lucena commented: “I found the talk by Peter Ducker of the Institute of Hospitality very clarifying. It gave us a better grasp of the scope of the institute's activities. It is also very nice to know that University of Brighton students have access to the institute's impressive database and also to a solid network of members of the industry.”
All our hospitality, events, travel and tourism students enjoy free access to the Institute of Hospitality online library as we are an EMS member.
