Orienteering day helps to steer pupils in the right direction

As part of their Physical Education BA(Hons) with QTS course at the School of Sport and Service Management, students spent a day with 30 Hastings’ pupils from William Parker Sports College. The year 11 students spent the morning at the university's Eastbourne campus learning the basics of orienteering before heading to the nearby Friston Forest in the afternoon to put these new found skills to use.
For the degree students the day gave them a real life, hands-on teaching experience; the opportunity to put their classroom based learning into practice and help develop their professionalism and skills as a teacher. The William Parker pupils learnt not just the skills of map reading but how to solve problems and make decisions as part of a team.
The day also gave the pupils a taste of university life and the types of sport courses offered in Eastbourne, and, as this short film shows, the University of Brighton should soon be welcoming some of the William Parker pupils on a more permanent basis.
