School of Sport and Service Management hosts a physical activity day

Fifty pupils from Cuckmere House and Bishop Bell schools spent a day at the University of Brighton’s Eastbourne campus taking part in a range of activities from dance to rugby.
The pupils were invited by second year degree students studying Sport Coaching, Physical Education with QTS and Sport and Exercise Science with PE at the School of Sport and Service Management. The day was designed to help the students develop their pedagogical and behaviour management skills within their course module Creating a Positive Teaching and Learning Environment.
The module covers practical strategies that can be adopted in order to nurture a positive learning climate where children feel physical and emotional safety in physical education and sport settings. The strategies are underpinned by applied social psychological theory which is weaved into the module.
Activity days such as this one are a great way of applying classroom theory to real-life situations and help build the students’ confidence as well as their skills.
Annie Murray, PE Teacher at Bishop Bell School said: "The students did very well, particularly as most are relatively inexperienced. The activities were well presented and enjoyable for all the pupils."
Cuckmere House School is a specialist school for children and young people with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. The school’s Primary PE Co-ordinator, Emma Pattenden, commented: “We had a great time on Monday, thank you again, and thanks to your students - they were really attentive and careful to involve everyone.”
