Standard hospitality textbook goes to ninth edition

Published 21 March 2013

What has become a standard and very well-respected textbook on human resource management in hospitality has now been republished in its ninth edition.

Written by two University of Brighton lecturers, Human Resource Management in the Hospitality Industry, a Guide to Best Practice, has been updated to include new legal requirements, latest data and statistics, and modern case studies to take into account the current trends and changes throughout the industry.

The book is the work of Michael Boella, Fellow of the Faculty of Education and Sport and lecturer in human resource management and law, and Stephen Goss-Turner, Head of Operations at the School of Sport and Service Management.

For an industry that relies on the strength of its people in terms of skills and adaptability, previous editions of the book have been invaluable not simply to students, but also to managers working within hospitality. This new edition is likely to prove just as popular as it gives readers the chance to explore, in a real-life context, the vital issues that are relevant to the workplace of today, while encouraging discussion and analysis across a range of HR-related topics.

In his review of the new textbook, Dr Florian Hummel, Dean and course leader of the Hospitality Management MA degree at ANGELL Business School, Freiburg, Germany, said:  “This new edition is a comprehensive yet easy to read text with a full range of relevant and updated data. Hospitality management students at both undergraduate as well as postgraduate level will find many helpful examples in this well-structured and student-friendly text.”

The format of the book goes beyond pure dissemination of information and facts, as it gives many international examples, provides ‘at-a-glance’ bulleted lists for quick reference, sets exercises to test knowledge, and recommends further reading for those who want to delve further into this fascinating subject.

This latest edition of Human Resource Management in the Hospitality Industry is printed by Routledge and costs £31.99 in paperback.
